Awakening to the call of good health

Sonali Nutrimix, a low cost supplementary food, has been developed to provide nutrition to the malnourished children & women.

SONALI  Nutrimix was born out of a scientific conviction deeply embedded into the Indian social context. India, in the 70s and 80s, was struggling to find solutions to the malady of malnutrition that was deeply affecting the deprived sections of society.

Having worked closely in the areas of mother and child health and nutrition, Shri  Ajoy Kr Mistry took up a project in late 6 years to conceptualize a proper child nutrition supplement that would be

  1. Made out of easily available ingredients
  2. Affordably priced for the financially weak
  3. Easy to prepare at home

The outcome of the project was very encouraging and SONALI Nutrimix was introduced to the world.

Ever since then there has been a constant endeavour to improve the flavour and form of SONALI Nutrimix.

Key insights on the need for nutrition

Context

  • An estimated 40% of the world’s severely malnourished children under the age of 5 live in India, 49.5 % below age 5 are severely or moderately underweight. 3 in every 4 children are anemic and 1 in 3 is stunted.
  • At least half of Indian infant deaths are related to malnutrition, often associated with infectious diseases.
  • In the districts of West Bengal, 51.8% of the children below 2 years of age are malnourished. 22.09% of these children suffer from moderate to severe anemia. West Bengal is the fourth worst state with malnutrition status and anemia.
  • The most damaging effects of under-nutrition occur during pregnancy and the first two years of a child’s life. These damages are irreversible. Malnutrition impedes motor, sensory, cognitive, inclusive social and economic development. Malnourished children are less likely to benefit from schooling, are vulnerable to child exploitation and will consequently have lower income as adults.

Reason

Child malnutrition is rampant because:

  • Access to nutrition remains a challenge due to poverty and habitus.
  • Quality of supply and performance of nutrition are often inadequate. What the subalterns can afford or get is substandard.
  • Inefficiency and Ineffectiveness: Institutional services are plagued by high overheads and are often lopsided. Some equally critical services get less attention. For example, government initiatives provide nutrition, but lack follow up and monitoring to ensure consumption and impact.
  • Community Involvement: Development programs often treat communities as passive recipients. Their lack of involvement and ownership pose challenges to sustainability of programs whenever the institutions reduce attention and support.

Solution

HUMANITY TRUST has worked and is still working towards finding innovative and implementable solutions for this problem. Two aspects of this solution are nutritious product  and  nutrition related services.

Community +  Model

  • Involvement and employment of women from economically marginalized community
  • Skill development and improvement in employability
  • “By the community, for the community” concept of dissipation of Zero Mile Delivery
  • A push to break the vicious cycle of poverty and promotion of socio-economic welfare
